Aircraft Tires: Types and Handling Methods

Operating an aircraft is an exciting feat; however, one must take many factors into consideration to ensure long term success during all of your flights. Aircraft comprise a vast collection of parts, all of which must be properly maintained with various different handling methods. That being said, this blog will focus on aircraft tires in particular, as well as their types and handling methods, so you may form a better understanding of this integral part of aircraft maintenance. Of course, optimum performance is only achieved when all aspects of flight are tended to with equal attention, and aircraft tires are merely another vital part of safe air travel.

The most common aircraft tire types can be classified into one of two categories, those being radial ply tires and bias ply tires. The structure of each is unique, with the latter being layered unlike the former. In other words, bias ply tires are made from various layers of rubber-coated ply cords, while radial ply tires depend on a layer structure of these same rubber-coated ply cords. The outer covering is made stable by covering it with a highly inextensible circumferential belt. Without layering, radial ply tires are relatively more flexible than their counterparts. Their ply cords stretch across their beads, centerlined at about 900 towards the treads. The outer covering is made stable by covering it with a highly inextensible circumferential belt.

Meanwhile, bias ply tires can be subdivided into two additional categories based on their composition to deal with gas inflation, with tubeless tires and tube tires being the most common variations. While tube tires use specialized tubes to inflate gas, tubeless tires instead rely on an inner line system. Regardless of your aircraft’s tire design, all tires require proper storage for optimal performance, and there are a number of factors to account for when not operating your aircraft.

The first rule of thumb is that tires should be stored in a cool, dry place, and most importantly, they should also be kept out of the way of sunlight. Furthermore, they should be stored according to local tire storage and handling humidity levels, and out of the way of oil, gasoline, hydraulic oils, jet fuels, and other similar hydrocarbons. Exposure to any of the aforementioned conditions have adverse effects on the material of your tires. When any damage occurs, repairs should be carried out immediately.

A crucial aspect of handling your tires is conducting proper mounting and dismounting. Inflated tires are delicate in that they are sensitive to bursting and exploding. As such, it is important to ensure all tires are inflated properly by checking its inflated rate pressure. Additionally, all tires must be deflated completely before being removed from the wheel during dismounting. Once all pressure is relieved, only then should you remove the valve core. As all tires are intended for use at a specific pressure, proper handling is of utmost importance when working with any of the previously mentioned tire types.

With all of this in mind, it is clear that proper aircraft tire handling and maintenance is no simple task, but a pilot must be attentive to all aspects of flight to fly safely.
