Cummins Inc. was founded in 1919 as Cummins Engine Company, a corporation in Columbus, Indiana and one of the first diesel engine manufacturers. In 2001, they changed their name to Cummins Inc. This company designs, manufactures, distributes and services diesel and natural gas engines and powertrain-related component products. This includes filtration, aftertreatment, turbochargers, fuel systems, controls systems, air handling systems, transmissions, electric power generation systems, batteries and electrified power systems. Cummins Inc. sells their products to original equipment manufacturers (OEMs), distributors, dealers and other customers worldwide. Engine Segment
Cummins Inc.’s engine segment manufactures a range of diesel and natural gas-powered engines. This includes heavy and medium duty trucks, recreational vehicles, light-duty automotive, construction, mining, marine, rail, oil and gas, defense, and agricultural markets. They specialize in engines ranging from 48 to 715 horsepower. Cummins Inc. also remanufactures old engines/components. Cummins Inc. engine models include the X12 and X15 which are utilized in larger utility vehicles, the ISF2.8 which is used in military applications, and the ISX12 which is implemented within firetrucks and emergency service vehicles.
Components Segment
Cummins Inc. components segment consists of four businesses: Cummins Filtration, Cummins Turbo Technologies, Cummins Emission Solutions, and Cummins Electronics and Fuel Systems.
1. Cummins Filtration: Manufactures and distributes heavy-duty air, fuel, hydraulic and lube filtration, chemicals and exhaust system technology products for diesel and gas-powered equipment.
2. Cummins Turbo Technologies: Manufactures and distributes turbochargers and related products on a global scale for diesel engines above three liters.
3. Cummins Emission Solutions: Develops and produces various emissions solutions designed to meet the highest emissions standards worldwide.
4. Cummins Electronics and Fuel Systems: The electronics product line develops engine control modules and electronic control units, software, sensors, and tools. The fuel system product line designs and manufactures both unit injector and common rail systems.
Power Systems Segment
The power systems segment consists of power generation equipment, technologies, and industrial distribution. Cummins Inc. manufactures power generators ranging from 2 kilowatts to 3.5 megawatts. They also produce controls, paralleling systems, transfer switches, and energy management systems for consumer, commercial, and industrial use. Alongside power generation equipment, Cummins Inc. manufactures diesel and natural gas high-horsepower engines up to 5,500 horsepower. This includes the mining, rail, defense, oil and gas, and commercial marine industries throughout the world. A/C generators/alternators are also manufactured by Cummins Inc. The Cummins Onan Standard Diesel generator is designed for use in emergency trucks and telecom fleets. The Onan Marine QD ⅘ KW Generator is used for heavy duty marine applications. The QuietConnect Series Generator was designed for personal use such as to power a home in case of emergency.
Electrified Power Segment
The electrified power segment manufactures electrified power systems ranging from fully electric to hybrid. They currently offer the Cummins PowerDrive series of fully electric and hybrid powertrain systems targeting various applications in the class 4-8 commercial vehicle markets and are developing the Cummins Battery Electric System. The Cummins Hybrid Power Plug-In System is in development for the urban bus market, which is expected to launch in 2020. Cummins Inc. manufactures battery modules, packs, and systems for commercial, industrial and material handling applications.
