About IBM
IBM (International Business Machines Corporation) is an American multinational technology company that produces and sells computer hardware, middleware, and software, and provides hosting and consulting services in computer technology. IBM is credited with the invention of products such as the floppy disk, the hard disk drive, the magnetic stripe card, the relational database, the SQL programming language, the UPC barcode, and dynamic random-access memory (DRAM).
IBM was established in 1911 through the merging of four businesses resulting in the Computing-Tabulating-Recording Company (CTR). As CTR, the company offered a variety of products and services, including the sale and leasing of machinery. By the end of CTR’s first decade, the company had begun to expand into foreign markets such as Asia, Australia, Europe, and South America. In 1924, the company was rebranded as International Business Machines, at which point many of their subsidiaries were merged together. IBM found continued success in the 1930’s following the release of their tabulating equipment, of which was used for the Social Security Act and various foreign operations.
Throughout the 1950’s and 1960’s, IBM continued to innovate, accomplishing things such as creation of the first practical artificial intelligence, working with space exploration, and introducing their first computer system. IBM also released Universal Product Code, created by one of their engineers in 1974. With financial losses in the late 1990’s, IBM oversaw major restructuring during the 2000’s, and sold many of their divisions to focus their efforts on artificial intelligence and computers. Recently, the company has begun growing once again, acquiring companies such as The Weather Company and Red Hat.
