About SAE International
The Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE) first began during the early 1900’s, caused by a rise of automobile manufacturers throughout the world. At this time, many automotive manufacturers sought each other’s advice to resolve common design problems and desired a set of standards to follow for ease of production. Noticing this trend, Peter Heldt and Horace Swetland, two magazine publishers, took it upon themselves to create ideas that would lead to the formation of the Society of Automobile Engineers in 1905. Initially, the president and vice president of this society were Andrew L. Riker and Henry Ford respectively, and the first decade proved fruitful with steady growth and technical journal publishing. As the society continued to expand and garner more attention, the American Society of Aeronautic Engineers, Society of Tractor Engineers, and the power boating industry all became interested in obtaining standards that could benefit their sectors as well. To increase representation, the society decided to rebrand themselves as the Society of Automotive Engineers. To this day, the Society of Automotive Engineers continues to expand with new global chapters, and they continue to publish papers and journals for manufacturing use.
