About Westinghouse Electric Corporation
The Westinghouse Electric Corporation was first formed in 1886, founded by entrepreneur and investor George Westinghouse. Westinghouse served as a pioneer of power generation, establishing the widespread use of AC voltage. During their initial years, Westinghouse also developed the world’s first industrial AC system, as well as installed AC generators at the Adams Power plant in order to supply Buffalo, New York with electricity.
During the early 1900’s, Westinghouse began to expand with the acquisition of multiple businesses, diversifying their served markets with the addition of home appliance products. In 1920, Westinghouse launched the first commercial radio broadbase and later developed a factory-built radio receiver as well. Beyond the radio, Westinghouse also produced various innovations such as the Rockefeller Center elevators, the world’s first atom smasher, the first all-weather airport approach lighting, the world’s first industrial gas turbine, and much more.
The 1990’s served as tough years for Westinghouse, as financial setbacks created a need for reorganization and restructuring. To turn themselves around, Westinghouse sold off various divisions and assets such as their non-nuclear power, defense electronics, office furniture, and residential security sectors. At this time, Westinghouse began to set their focus on broadcasting, purchasing various networks such as CBS. With CBS acquired, Westinghouse rebranded themselves as CBS Corporation and utilized the Westinghouse name as their subsidiary. In 1999, CBS was acquired by Viacom.
